First explain where the vehicle is
A parking lot and a narrow roadside shoulder present different working conditions. Give the exact location and describe traffic or access concerns. Do not stand in traffic or inspect a roadside tire from an unsafe position just to answer a question.
If the vehicle is creating an immediate danger or someone is injured, call 911. A roadside-service request does not replace emergency assistance. You can describe what you already know without attempting to lift the vehicle.
Check what replacement equipment you have
If you already know where the spare is and can check safely, tell the provider whether it is present and appears usable. Some vehicles have a repair kit or another arrangement instead; consult the vehicle’s manual rather than assuming there is a spare.
- Year, make and model of the vehicle.
- Which tire or tires are affected.
- Whether a spare is present and its known condition.
- Whether a wheel-lock key is available, if applicable.
- Known wheel damage or other problems beyond loss of air.
Understand what a tire change covers
Changing a wheel to a suitable spare is different from repairing a puncture or supplying a replacement tire. Do not assume tire sales, puncture repair or a particular spare are included. Explain what equipment you have and ask what can be done for your situation.
If there is no usable spare, more than one tire is damaged, or the location is unsuitable for the work, discuss whether towing is the practical next step. The answer should be based on the actual vehicle and circumstances.
Know the plan after a spare is fitted
A temporary spare can have operating limits that differ from the normal wheel and tire. Follow the speed and distance limits in the spare’s markings and your owner’s manual. Arrange appropriate tire service afterward.

Can I keep driving on a temporary spare?
Use the limits specified on that spare and in your vehicle’s manual, and arrange proper tire service. There is no single limit suitable for every spare.
