Identify the vehicle and power system
Give the year, make and model, and say whether it is a conventional, hybrid or electric vehicle. The equipment and procedure must suit the vehicle. AAA’s battery guidance emphasizes checking vehicle-specific instructions before a jump-start.
- Make, model, year and type of power system.
- What you observed during the no-start problem.
- Your exact location and how the vehicle is parked.
- Whether the keys are available.
- Any smoke, unusual heat, damage or other immediate concern.
Distinguish a battery boost from EV charging
A low-voltage starting or support-battery issue is different from an electric vehicle running out of driving range. Explain which situation you believe you have, and say if you are unsure. Fuel delivery does not recharge an electric vehicle. If the driving battery is depleted, ask about transport to a suitable charging location.
If you notice smoke, fire or an immediate danger, call 911 and follow emergency guidance rather than waiting for an ordinary roadside appointment. Do not handle damaged batteries or attempt unfamiliar electrical work.
Ask what happens after the attempt
Before service is arranged, confirm the price, expected timing and what the next option is if a boost does not resolve the problem. If the vehicle starts, ask whether further diagnosis is recommended; do not assume that starting once makes a continuing fault disappear.
